South African amapiano music continues its unprecedented global takeover, with three tracks by local artists claiming spots in the Billboard Global Top 10 this week.

DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small’s latest collaboration “Ubuntu” sits at number 2, while emerging artist Uncle Waffles holds the number 6 spot with “Joburg Nights.”

The genre, which originated in Pretoria’s townships, has evolved from local house parties to filling stadiums worldwide. Major international music festivals now feature dedicated amapiano stages, and global superstars are lining up for collaborations with South African producers.

“Amapiano is not just music — it’s a cultural movement,” said music journalist Bongani Fassie. “It represents the creativity and resilience of South African youth.”

The South African music industry is now worth an estimated R12 billion annually, with amapiano contributing significantly to export revenue.
